MyMiltonKeynes BID has commissioned a new Wayfinding Study to help improve how people navigate the city centre, supporting increased footfall, better accessibility and a stronger overall visitor experience.
The project, approved by the BID Board, marks the first step in developing a clearer, more connected city centre, making it easier for people to move between destinations, discover new areas and make the most of everything Milton Keynes has to offer.
Making it easier to explore the city centre
Feedback from businesses has highlighted that visitors often stay within one area rather than exploring the wider city centre. While distances between key destinations are relatively short, perception of distance and a lack of clear navigation can discourage movement.
The Wayfinding Study will focus on understanding how people currently move through the city centre and identifying opportunities to encourage greater exploration.
By improving navigation, the BID aims to support increased footfall across different areas, particularly benefiting hospitality, retail and leisure businesses.
Looking ahead to a growing city
This work comes at an important time for Milton Keynes, with significant investment and growth planned over the coming years. Major developments include plans for a new city centre entertainment venue, significant new residential growth, and the future opening of Universal Studios, which is expected to bring a substantial increase in visitors to the area.
The city centre will play a key role as a gateway for these visitors, making it even more important that navigation is clear, intuitive and welcoming.
A future-focused approach
Rather than assessing outdated signage, much of which has already been removed, the audit will take a forward-looking approach. It will focus on how wayfinding should work in the future, identifying where improvements are needed and how navigation can be supported across the city centre as it continues to evolve.
The work will also consider how visitors are guided to attractions beyond the city centre, helping to strengthen Milton Keynes’ position as a connected destination.
Accessibility will be a key theme, with the audit exploring how navigation can be made more inclusive for all users, including those with visual impairments.
Working in partnership
The findings from the audit will be shared with Milton Keynes City Council to help inform future decisions around wayfinding infrastructure and investment.
MyMiltonKeynes BID will work closely with partners and stakeholders throughout the process to ensure the recommendations reflect the needs of businesses and visitors alike.
Supporting businesses through better connectivity
This initiative forms part of the BID’s wider commitment to supporting businesses by helping shape the future of the city centre environment. By making it easier and more enjoyable for people to navigate Milton Keynes City Centre, the audit will help create a more connected, welcoming and vibrant destination for residents, visitors and businesses.
